In the meantime, I’d like to share some tips to help you achieve a better fit for your mitts. Knitting mitts involves working with small circumferences (hand and thumb), and you need to get the gauge right for a well-fitting result. I know it can feel intimidating. I get it. But it is doable, with a bit of preparation.
Find your size
Measure around your knuckles to determine your hand circumference—this is generally the widest part of your hand. 🤚 Then, consult the pattern 🗒️ and choose a size that provides about an inch of negative ease. This means the finished circumference of your fingerless mitt will be slightly smaller than your actual hand measurement, ensuring a snug fit.
Hand circumference - 1” = Finished circumference of mitt
Your gauge swatch
Here’s a little secret! You can skip the usual swatching and start knitting the cuff right after selecting your size. Knit about an inch of the cuff, then try it on. It should fit snugly around your wrist, with the cuff’s circumference about an inch smaller than that of the mitt’s finished circumference. 🧤
Finished circumference of mitt - 1” = Cuff circumference
At this point, if you find your cuff to be too loose or too tight, you need to try again with a different needle size. But this method of swatching is straightforward and gives a clear sense of the fit.
Fit of your thumb gusset
The fit around the thumb gusset is key to the overall comfort of the mitt. 👍 I recently shared a mini knitting lesson on Reels, explaining how the thumb gusset increases should fit on the hand. Be sure to check it out. 🤗
I hope you find these tips helpful. Do you have a favorite way to ensure a better fit for your mitts? Please share in the comments so we can all learn from each other. 💗

Ooh the Mika vest stitch pattern looks dreamy! I’m also interested in double knitting- in all my knitting years I haven’t done it. That looks like a perfect use for that technique. I have a promised project to knit, then I’m going after those mitts.
I am officially a fan of your mitt patterns because they fit me perfectly (after measuring hand circumference and getting gauge of course 😄) and they are always the best combination of easy knitting and a fun pattern on the back of the hand. I love my Almas Mitts and they are going to get a lot of wear. They are the first thing I have knit with mohair and certainly won't be the last!
And about that vest... I absolutely must knit that! I love vests and texture and doubleknit edging. I don't want to rush you, but any idea when the pattern will be ready? 😂 What weight of yarn are you using for it so I can start planning?
