How this pattern came about
This design is my contribution to the upcoming Bay Area Yarn Crawl—a fun-filled event with a Make-Along (MAL) featuring three cowl designs in three different crafts. I am honored to be working alongside Kira and Ksenia for this unique mini-collection. 💕
Although I’ve been teaching beginner and intermediate crochet classes for the past two years, I haven’t published any crochet designs in quite some time. This collaboration was a great opportunity for me to get a crochet design out there.
The idea behind Ceremonial Grade Cowl
I’m always fascinated by how some yarn and humble tools can be used to create something beautiful, unique, and worthy of celebration. I wanted Ceremonial Grade Cowl to be one such project - to have fun with simple stitches and colors stripes and make a lovely cowl complete with a stylish slit for versatile wear.
Pattern Features
Ceremonial Grade cowl is a delightful canvas for experimenting with color! Combine solids, tonals, gradients, variegated yarns, or mini-skeins to create your unique look. Explore medium or high-contrast combinations to add striking visual interest.
The pattern includes instructions for 3️⃣ sizes and works up quickly, making it perfect for last-minute gifts or spontaneous projects.
To keep things beginner-friendly, the cowl is worked flat and seamed.
Fabric Quality
Generally, I like to pay attention to the appearance and quality of the fabric produced by stitch patterns in my designs.
For this project, I have maintained the knit-like texture on the right side of the fabric. This texture is achieved by alternatively working over the three loops of the hdc stitch.
When I researched one-row crochet stripes, there were very few that did not suggest carrying the unused color across. This made a somewhat heavy fabric which I did not like.
So I had to figure out a way to not carry the unused colors across and still achieve the texture and lightness I am going after. I ended up using a method where we turn the fabric once every two rows.
And I am happy to report this one has given me very satisfying results and is also fairly quick to make once you understand the stitch pattern.
What color scheme will you be using for your cowl? Are you making the other crawl designs too? Let me know! ❤️
What is a Yarn Crawl? 🎪
For those who aren’t familiar, a yarn crawl is an event where fiber enthusiasts visit as many local yarn shops (LYS) as possible within a designated timeframe.
The Bay Area Yarn Crawl runs from March 14 to 23, 2025, featuring 22 shops in the San Francisco Bay Area. Along the way, you’ll find games, prizes, trunk shows, designer meet-and-greets, book signings, and more. 🏦🎒
The above details are from the Bay Area Yarn Crawl website. Be sure to subscribe to their newsletter to stay updated and start planning your crawl!
Yarn Crawl Team
I’m thrilled to have contributed in a small way to this amazing event. Please check out the brilliant and beautiful designs by Kira and Ksenia for the crawl.
Apart from us designers, there is a team of yarn dyers and LYS owners who volunteer and work tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event a smooth and happy experience for everyone. 🌐
I hope many of you will participate and enjoy and make it a huge success for these small businesses! 🎊
